My Diet Staples

Happy Monday!

Hope everyone kicked off their week happily and smoothly. As much as the world dreads Mondays, I like to look at it as a fresh start – a new week to set goals, do something differently, be better than you were last week.

I had a great Monday! It was such a beautiful day, summer is almost here! So to take advantage of the gorgeous weather I went on a hike around a big, beautiful lake. It was so energizing and rejuvenating to spend the day outdoors enjoying nature and the warm sunshine. If you don’t make a point to spend at least a little bit of time outdoors enjoying nature every day I highly recommend it – so good for the soul.

After hiking, an iced coffee with a splash of almond milk was calling my name. The perfect way to end a great afternoon. Although I am enjoying my time off, the unemployed life is starting to catch up to me. This chick is broke. But we won’t dwell on that right now.

Being a dietetics student, I wanted to write a post about my own healthy diet staples that I frequently enjoy. I hope by sharing what I eat it may inspire some to try out some of the delicious, healthy foods that I love and show readers that eating well is really very simple & easy.

So, here you go!

My Diet Staples:

Vegetables: spinach, romaine lettuce, baby carrots, cucumber, celery, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, grape tomatoes, brussel sprouts, string beans, asparagus, broccoli, sweet potato & sugar snap peas

Fruits: apples, bananas, oranges, grapefruit, avocado, berries, lemons, limes, grapes, pineapple, mango and kiwi

Grains: sprouted whole grain breads, whole grain pasta, brown rice, quinoa, whole grain pitas and wraps, oats and homemade granola.

Dairy & Alternatives: yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, almond milk, cheese (I LOVE cheese).

Meat & Alternatives: I don’t eat meat very often. I probably eat it around twice a week and I also enjoy fish & shellfish and if I do eat meat it is typically likely lean meat like chicken. Mind you I will enjoy a burger on occasion. Typically for protein I enjoy nuts, nut butter (BIG favourite here), eggs, egg whites, plant-based protein powder and legumes such as beans, chickpeas and lentils.

Some other things that I frequently enjoy: tea (I have quite the tea collection), coffee, chia seeds, flax seed, unsweetened dried fruits, unsweetened coconut, dark chocolate & stevia*.

* I’ve recently started using stevia to sweeten things like greek yogurt, coffee and baked goods. Although stevia is a natural, zero-calorie sweetener, I try to only use it occasionally and not on a daily basis because I would rather have my taste buds trained to enjoy the flavours of my foods without any sweetening whatsoever rather than craving more sweetness.

So there you are. My diet staples! I do eat other things, but these are the foods that I most frequently eat. I hope this helped guide you on how you should be fuelling your body. Be kind to your body and choose fresh produce, low-fat dairy products such as milk and yogurt, whole grains, vegetable proteins and if you eat meat choose lean meats/red meat in moderation.

Remember, this is a new week to improve yourself and achieve new goals. Be good to yourself & be good to others!

Bye for now,

Hannah
